Have always been interested in aircraft, particularly ww2 ones. Parents were in wartime raf and I learnt to draw by making pencil studies of my favourite planes from that period, as well as being an enthusiastic'Airfix'fan. Childish as it may seem, knowing of the real horror of war, I have always wanted to paint a visula counterpart of Waltons'Spitfire Prelude'-a piece of music that manages still to evoke the beauty and romance of the Spit and the importance of the Battle of britain without glorifying war. I also wanted to get the'feel'of the Spitfire-that'perfect Lady'while at the same time preserving my free-ranging colour and neo-cubist structure and painterly attack. I succeeded, I think-one of my finest works!
